The Spirit and the Word: Which Comes First?


The Word of God and the Spirit of God are inseparable forces in the life of a believer. However, understanding their relationship and which one takes precedence can unlock a deeper walk with God. The Word of God brings knowledge, but it is the Spirit of God that gives life to that knowledge.

The Source of the Word

The Word of God originates from the Spirit of God. In 2 Peter 1:21, we read:

  • “For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

Without the Spirit, the Word remains mere letters and information. But when the Spirit moves upon the Word, it becomes a life-giving force, able to transform hearts, renew minds, and set captives free.

An Illustration: A Kite and the Wind

Picture a child flying a kite. The kite, beautifully crafted, is useless without the wind to lift it. The Spirit of God is like the wind—it carries the Word, giving it power and direction. Without the Spirit, the Word is like a lifeless kite, unable to soar or fulfill its purpose.

Why the Spirit Comes First

The Spirit gives life to the Word. Jesus Himself said in John 6:63:

  • “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.”

The Word of God in your heart or on your lips is without power if the Spirit of God is not present in your life. It is the Spirit that activates the Word, making it effective and powerful.

In Genesis 1, we see this dynamic:

  • “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:2-3).

The Spirit was present first, setting the stage for the Word to manifest creation.

The Spirit Brings Revelation

Without the Spirit of God, the Word of God remains veiled. Paul writes:

  • “The letter kills, but the Spirit gives life” (2 Corinthians 3:6).

The Spirit brings understanding and reveals the mysteries of God’s Word. Jesus promised this in John 14:26:

  • “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

It is the Spirit who teaches us how to apply God’s Word in our lives and empowers us to walk in it.

The Power of the Word Through the Spirit

When the Word and the Spirit work together, miracles happen. Psalm 107:20 declares:

  • “He sent out His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave.”

The Word is sent by the Spirit to bring healing, deliverance, and restoration. Acts 19:20 also illustrates this partnership:

  • “So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.”

The Word prevailed because the Spirit empowered it.

What Should We Seek First?

It is the Spirit of God that enables us to truly grasp, believe, and apply the Word of God. Seeking the Spirit first is like preparing the soil before planting seeds. A heart filled with the Spirit is ready to receive the Word and bear fruit.

The Spirit and the Word are not in competition; they complement one another. However, the Spirit’s role in bringing the Word to life is foundational.

Living by the Spirit and the Word

To live effectively as a Christian, we need both the Spirit and the Word:

  1. Be Filled with the Spirit: Ask God daily to fill you with His Spirit. “Be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18).
  2. Meditate on the Word: Let the Word dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16). As you read, pray for the Spirit’s guidance.
  3. Speak the Word with Faith: When the Spirit breathes on the Word, it becomes a weapon against challenges (Ephesians 6:17).
  4. Walk in Obedience: The Spirit will prompt you to act on the Word, leading to fruitfulness in your life.

Conclusion

The Spirit of God and the Word of God are inseparable, but the Spirit comes first. The Word gains power, life, and effectiveness through the Spirit. As believers, we are called to seek the Spirit, allowing Him to quicken the Word in our hearts and empower us to live victoriously.

Do not merely gather knowledge of the Word; seek the Spirit who gives it life. When you do, you’ll experience the transformative power of God’s Word in every area of your life.
