Worship in Christ: Total Surrender and Transformation
Worship is often reduced to the singing of songs or attending a church service. While these are expressions of worship, true worship goes much deeper. At its core, worship is total surrender to the one you worship. It is an acknowledgment of who God is, followed by the surrender of your life to Him in all things. The essence of worship is that you become what you worship. As believers in Christ, worshipping God transforms us into His image, manifesting His glory in every area of our lives.
What is Worship?
Worship, in its truest form, is about much more than external acts. It is a posture of the heart, a lifestyle of reverence and submission to God. The Greek word for worship, *proskuneo*, means “to bow down” or “to prostrate oneself.” In worship, we lay down our lives in full surrender to God, recognizing His lordship and authority over us.
Romans 12:1 says, “I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” True worship, then, is a daily offering of ourselves—our thoughts, desires, actions, and every part of our lives—to God as a living sacrifice.
In this act of worship, something remarkable happens: we are changed. The Bible tells us that we are transformed into the image of what we worship. 2 Corinthians 3:18 describes this transformation: “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
Becoming What You Worship
One of the most profound truths in Scripture is that worship leads to transformation. You become what you worship. When we worship God, focusing on His character and attributes, we are changed into His likeness. This is the work of the Holy Spirit in us.
In 2 Corinthians 3:16-18, Paul teaches that as we turn to the Lord and behold His glory, we are transformed into the same image, from glory to glory, by the Spirit of the Lord. This means that as we worship God, focusing on His righteousness, holiness, love, and power, we are progressively transformed into the full expression of these attributes.
For example, when you worship God as your righteousness, you become the full expression of His righteousness in the world around you. It is not just a theoretical or spiritual change; it is a real transformation that affects how you live, speak, and interact with others. Worship brings you into alignment with who God is, and as a result, you reflect His character to those around you.
Surrender and Transformation
To see the glory of God manifest in any area of your life, you must fully surrender that area to Him in worship. Worship is not just an acknowledgment of who God is but also an act of surrendering every part of your life to Him. Whether it is your finances, relationships, health, or future, God desires to manifest His glory in all areas of your life. But this manifestation is tied to your surrender.
When you worship God as your source, acknowledging Him as the provider and sustainer of all things, His glory will manifest in your life’s provision. When you worship God as your healer, fully surrendering your health to Him, His healing power is manifested in your body. This principle holds true for every area of life—God will manifest Himself in the areas we surrender to Him in worship.
However, when we hold back areas of our lives from God—when we only partially surrender—we limit His ability to manifest His power and glory. God desires full surrender, and it is in total surrender that we experience the fullness of His presence and power. Psalm 37:5 says, "Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will act." When we fully commit our lives to God, He moves in ways that we could never imagine.
Partial Surrender Leads to Partial Manifestation
One reason God’s power and glory may seem absent in certain areas of our lives is that we have not fully surrendered those areas to Him. We may worship God in some aspects of our lives but hold back in others. For example, we may trust God as our healer but struggle to trust Him as our provider, or we may acknowledge God as our Savior but hesitate to surrender our relationships to His lordship.
James 1:6-7 warns that divided loyalty results in instability: "But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord." God desires to be Lord over every area of our lives, and partial surrender can prevent us from experiencing the fullness of His glory.
The more we surrender to God in worship, the more areas of our lives come under His lordship, and the more He is able to manifest His power in those areas. This is why worship is not a one-time event but a continual act of yielding our hearts and lives to God daily.
Worship and the Manifestation of God’s Glory
Worship is the key to seeing God’s glory manifest in our lives. The glory of God is His divine presence, power, and goodness revealed in tangible ways. In Exodus 33:18-19, Moses asked God, “Please, show me your glory.” God’s response was to reveal His goodness and proclaim His name. When we worship, we invite God’s glory into our lives. As we behold Him in worship, His goodness, presence, and power become real to us.
When we worship God as our source, healer, deliverer, or righteousness, we are acknowledging His ability and authority to move in those areas of our lives. And as we surrender fully to Him in worship, He begins to manifest His glory in ways that bring transformation, healing, provision, and freedom.
Conclusion: Total Surrender Leads to Transformation
Worship is more than an act; it is a lifestyle of total surrender to God. As we worship God with our whole hearts, acknowledging who He is and surrendering every area of our lives to Him, we are transformed into His image. The result is that we become what we worship—reflecting the righteousness, holiness, love, and power of God to the world around us.
If you desire to see the glory of God manifest in every area of your life, begin by fully surrendering those areas to Him in worship. Worship God not only with your words but with your whole life—your thoughts, your actions, your desires, and your plans. As you do, you will experience the fullness of His presence and power, and His glory will shine through you in ever-increasing measure.
Let worship become your daily offering, and watch as God transforms you from glory to glory, by His Spirit, into the image of Christ.
