Quickened by the Spirit: Embracing Death to Self for New Life in Christ
Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain” (John 12:24). This profound teaching reveals a deep spiritual truth: new life in Christ comes only when we die to ourselves. This death is not physical but rather a surrender of our own will, desires, and self-sufficiency. Only by laying down our lives can we be “quickened,” or made alive, by the Spirit of God. This quickening—this life-giving transformation by the Holy Spirit—is the source of all true spiritual fruitfulness.
Dying to Self: The Path to Life
The Bible teaches that to be made alive in Christ, we must first experience a spiritual “death.” In Romans 6:3-4, Paul writes, “Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” This means that when we come to Christ, we are called to die to our old selves—to our former ways, desires, and ambitions.
True transformation and spiritual life begin only after we embrace this death. We cannot hold on to our old lives and simultaneously experience the fullness of God’s Spirit. Jesus’ death on the cross was a physical act, but it represented the ultimate surrender to the Father’s will, and as His followers, we are called to follow His example by surrendering all.
The Spirit of God Brings Life
Once we surrender to Christ, the Spirit of God begins to work within us, bringing life where there was once spiritual deadness. Romans 8:11 declares, “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” This same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives within believers, quickening our spirits and enabling us to live a life that reflects God’s glory.
Through the Spirit, we experience new life, and our hearts are transformed to produce spiritual fruit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). This transformation is not merely about outward behavior but an inner renewal that brings us closer to the character of Christ.
Walking in New Life: The Power of the Quickened Spirit
To walk in the power of the Spirit, we must continually choose to lay down our old ways. Paul reminds us in Colossians 3:3, “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” This hidden life in Christ is one of deep fellowship and communion with God, guided and empowered by the Spirit. When we are quickened by the Spirit, our lives take on a new purpose and direction. We no longer live for ourselves but for Christ who died for us and now lives in us.
Being quickened by the Spirit is a process of continual surrender. Paul wrote, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God” (Galatians 2:20). This life in the Spirit is a journey, one where we learn to rely less on our abilities and more on God’s power working within us.
Bearing Spiritual Fruit
When a seed falls to the ground and dies, it produces a harvest. In the same way, when we die to ourselves and are quickened by the Spirit, we begin to bear spiritual fruit. Jesus said, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (John 15:8). Bearing fruit glorifies God and demonstrates that we are truly His followers. This fruitfulness is not something we can accomplish on our own; it is the Spirit’s work within us.
We become conduits of God’s love, joy, peace, and goodness to those around us. Our lives reflect His light, and we become vessels through which God’s glory can shine. The fruit of the Spirit is a testament to the transforming power of Christ’s life within us, a life that only emerges through death to self and surrender to God.
Living in Resurrection Power
Paul encourages us in Ephesians 2:4-5, “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).” God, in His grace, not only calls us to die to ourselves but also raises us up with Christ, filling us with His Spirit and empowering us to live out our calling as His children.
This resurrection power allows us to overcome sin, walk in God’s love, and live a life that brings glory to Him. It is a life not limited by human ability but fueled by God’s Spirit, allowing us to fulfill the good works He has prepared for us.
Conclusion: Embracing Death to Experience True Life
The journey of being quickened by the Spirit begins with a willingness to die to self, surrendering our desires and agendas at the foot of the cross. As we yield to God, the Spirit of God breathes new life into us, empowering us to live a life that reflects Christ. This quickening by the Spirit is not just an emotional experience but a daily walk of faith, surrender, and obedience.
May we embrace this call to die to ourselves so that we may live fully in Christ, bearing fruit that brings glory to God. Let us allow the Spirit to work in us, transforming our hearts and minds, so that we may walk in the fullness of life that only He can give.
